Deputies are mandated to attend monthly classes in Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Legal Update, First Aid and CPR, Narcotic Detection and Identification, Stress Management, Defensive Tactics, Firearm Qualifications and many other courses all designed to train sheriff's deputies to become some of the best trained officers and to better serve and protect the public.

Captain Thibodeaux’s staff includes Leutenant Blaine Guillory who has 31 years of law enforcement and 4 P.O.S.T. Instructor certifications. He also is a graduate of Eunice High School.  Lt. Guillory served a total of 23 years with Eunice Police Department until his retirement   Lt. Guillory is certified as a P.O.S.T Firearms Instructor, A.L.S Less Lethal Instructor, Taser Instructor, and Radar Instructor. He also holds instructor certifications as a Glock Armorer / Instructor, Remington 870 and M-700 Armorer.

Not only does the training section instruct our deputies but many other departments statewide.  The section assists smaller departments in many aspects of law enforcement including firearms, defensive tactics, and pepper spray.  Thibodeaux and Guillory are also instructors at the St. Martin Parish Police Training Academy.

Our training section also instructs civilians in many areas like Operation Lifesaver, Self Defense classes and many other issues, all classes are free of charge.  The St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office is proud to have Thibodeaux on staff; Thibodeaux is the only Self Defense instructor that is recognized by the National Black Belt League and the Sport Karate International League as the 2003 World Champion in Self Defense.  The Women's Self Defense class entails awareness and street survival skills which ends with the participants fighting a padded aggressor.  This makes the course second to none and has the participants using the skills taught to them in the class in real life scenarios.  The free course is taught in our area schools, civic originations, and church groups.  Over 2,100 teen to adult women statewide have gone through the class.

SWAT/H.E.A.T

The SWAT team is often equipped with specialized firearms including rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, carbines, riot control agents, stun grenades, and high-powered rifles for snipers. Hard Entry and Tactics (H.E.A.T.) is the team name for the sheriff's crisis team.  The team is also responsible for VIP Security:  Security is provided for any visiting official/person that may need the service.
