Captain Derrick A. Miles
Narcotics Unit Supervisor
Captain Derrick A. Miles was born in Port Barre, LA, attended Port Barre High School as well as Junction City High School in the state of Oregon; where he lettered in Football, Basketball and Track and Field. He also received a Bachelors of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Western Oregon University; where he earned to be a two time Scholarship athlete in Football/Track and Field.
He joined the United States Army and served in during Operation Iraqi Freedom as an Army Ranger; at Fort Lewis, Washington and served in two tours of duties in Iraq. Captain Miles concluded his military service, after eight years, at the rank of Staff Sergeant and received Honorable Discharge from the United States Army.
Captain Miles was hired by the New Orleans Criminal Sheriff’s Office in 2005 as a Corrections Officer, were he began his Law Enforcement career.
Captain Miles was hired by the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office in 2006, as a patrolman. He attended the St. Martin Parish Training Academy at the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office, later in 2006. Captain Miles graduated from the academy and received his P.O.S.T. certification on April 19, 2006.
Captain Miles was promoted to Detective, in the Narcotics section at the Sheriff’s Office, in 2007. In this position he investigated the use and sales of Narcotics in St. Landry Parish.
Captain Miles was promoted to Narcotics Unit Supervisor in December 2011 and currently serves in that position. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2012.
Captain Miles holds numerous certifications in Narcotics Investigation; by the Regional Counter Drug Training Academy (RCTA), High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) and the Acadiana Crime Laboratory.
Captain Miles is recognized as an expert in Narcotics Investigation by the 27TH Judicial District Court in St. Landry Parish. Captain Miles is also S.W.A.T. certified and currently S.W.A.T team leader on St. Landry Parish S.W.A.T team and is a level one Instructor in Strategic Self-Defense Grappling Techniques (SSGT).
As the Narcotics Unit Supervisor, Captain Miles supervises one Drug Enforcement Administration Task Force Agent, six Narcotics Detectives, and two Highway Interdiction Officers / K-9 Officers.
