Bio

Captain Ivory Chevis Jr. was born in Opelousas, La., where he attended Christ the King Elementary School in Bellevue and graduated in 1975 from St. Peter Claver High School in Grand Coteau La.

Captain Ivory Chevis has been protecting and serving this great Nation and this Parish for over thirty four years of his life.  Captain Chevis joined the U.S.  Army in 1975, where he served for over twenty two years before retiring in 1997.  Captain Chevis’ desire to continue serving, lead him to apply with the St. Landry Sheriff’s Office in July of 1998 as a patrolman.

Captain Chevis’ stay in the U.S Army saw him rise through the enlisted ranks, where he served in numerous positions and locations around the world.  While in those positions he was trained to train numerous young men and women in an array of skills needed to excel in their jobs in the military.

Captain Chevis attended numerous Military and Civilian Schools from basic to advance courses which dealt with day to day operation in the Army and tactics which were needed for soldiers to survive during combat and non-combat missions. These tasks were as simple as performing simple first aid to blowing a bridge using high explosives.

Captain Chevis joined the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office in July of 1998, where he was assigned as a patrolman, patrolling the roads of St. Landry Parish.  Captain Chevis, while at St. Landry Sheriff’s Office for only two years, was voted Patrolman of the Year and Male Deputy of the Year for the year 2000 by his Supervisors and Peers.   Captain Chevis attended and completed the Aleta Police Academy in New Iberia in 2002.  After returning to patrol, Captain Chevis was later promoted to the rank of Sergeant where he was responsible for the supervision of the patrol deputies, jailers, and dispatchers on one of the night shifts.

Captain Chevis’ desire to excel in police work lead him to apply and be accepted with the Criminal Investigation Division (Detective section) of the St. Landry Sheriff’s Office.  Captain Chevis attended numerous police schools, such as basic and advance homicide investigation, crime scene investigation, interview and integration, finger printing and other police related courses. While working as a Detective, Captain Chevis was again recognized as Deputy of the Year by the Opelousas Rotary Club in 2008.  Captain Chevis was later promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and held the position of the Assistance Chief of Detectives in 2009.  Captain Chevis was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2010 and currently serves as Chief of Detectives.

Captain Chevis supervises eight Criminal Investigators who handle and investigate all crimes against person and property in St. Landry Parish.
